Homeowners who are pressed for space, but not desiring to change the footprint or size of their home, should look up. As in their attic space. Most homes have attics and most attics can accommodate at least one room, a bonus room of sorts that can add value and living space to any room.

Carpeting may be best for a room that has insufficient heating, but is still usable for a bedroom, an office or as a hideaway room.

Lighting and outlets — You may need to hire an electrician if your lighting and electrical connections are not sufficient in your attic. You’ll want a sufficient number of electrical outlets, overhead lighting and you may want to extend your home’s security system to the top floor of your house. Ensure tha...
