How to Keep Critters Out of Your Attic

Written by Matthew C. Keegan  //  2011/11/17  //  Attic  //  No comments

As fall gives way to winter, you’ll notice that squirrels are making a stepped up effort to gather nuts in advance of the cold weather. Acorns are a favorite of these and other rodents, but if you’re not careful they won’t be simply burying them in your yard and coming back later. Some animals, squirrels included, look for a secure and warm place to hide out for the winter. That place might be your attic and the evidence of rodent intrusion may be as simple as hearing the scampering of little feet across your roof throughout the day.

If you suspect that critters have taken up residence in your attic, there are certain things that you can do to remove them before they chew up insulation or, worse, bite into wires and cause a house fire:

1. Trim trees near the house – Unless you spot squirrels scampering up a drain pipe to your roof, the source providing access to your roof is probably one or more trees. If a tree is next to your home, you may want to cut it down. If branches hang over the roof, then have these removed.

2. Cover and remove trash – The smell of rotting food attracts squirrels, possum and raccoons, a problem you can eliminate by securing containers with a lock. Better yet: move your trash far away from your home – place garbage cans next to the shed can still provide them with cover.

3. Consider your bird feeders – Squirrels are attracted to bird feeders and although you like supplying what your feathered friends need, you could be creating a source of attraction for rodents. Either get rid of the feeders or switch to safflower seed, a food source that squirrels find bitter to the taste.

4. Look for points of entry – It may not be enough to trim trees and remove trash. If a rodent wants to get into your home, it’ll find a way. That way may be apparent if there is a hole in your roof or soffit, someth...
